Estimation under group actions: recovering orbits from invariants

چکیده
Motivated by geometric problems in signal processing, computer vision, and structural biology, we study a class of orbit recovery problems where we observe noisy copies of an unknown signal, each acted upon by a random element of some group (such as Z/p or SO(3)). The goal is to recover the orbit of the signal under the group action. This generalizes problems of interest such as multi-reference alignment (MRA) and the reconstruction problem in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). We obtain matching lower and upper bounds on the sample complexity of these problems in high generality, showing that the statistical difficulty is intricately determined by the invariant theory of the underlying symmetry group. In particular, we determine that for cryo-EM with noise variance σ and uniform viewing directions, the number of samples required scales as σ. We match this bound with a novel algorithm for ab initio reconstruction in cryo-EM, based on invariant features of degree at most 3. We further discuss how to recover multiple molecular structures from heterogeneous cryo-EM samples.

متن کاملStructure from Motion: Theoretical Foundations of a Novel Approach Using Custom Built Invariants
We rephrase the problem of 3D reconstruction from images in terms of intersections of projections of orbits of custom built Lie groups actions. We then use an algorithmic method based on moving frames à la Fels-Olver to obtain a fundamental set of invariants of these groups actions. The invariants are used to define a set of equations to be solved by the points of the 3D object, providing a new...
متن کاملThe symplectic vortex equations and invariants of Hamiltonian group actions
In this paper we define invariants of Hamiltonian group actions for central regular values of the moment map. The key hypotheses are that the moment map is proper and that the ambient manifold is symplectically aspherical. The invariants are based on the symplectic vortex equations. Applications include an existence theorem for relative periodic orbits, a computation for circle actions on a com...
متن کاملSignature submanifolds for some equivalence problems
This article concerned on the study of signature submanifolds for curves under Lie group actions SE(2), SA(2) and for surfaces under SE(3). Signature submanifold is a regular submanifold which its coordinate components are differential invariants of an associated manifold under Lie group action, and therefore signature submanifold is a key for solving equivalence problems.
متن کاملSymmetric Subgroup Actions on Isotropic Grassmannians
Let G be the group preserving a nondegenerate sesquilinear form B on a vector space V , and H a symmetric subgroup of G of the type G1 × G2. We explicitly parameterize the H-orbits in GrG(r), the Grassmannian of r-dimensional isotropic subspaces of V , by a complete set of H-invariants. We describe the Bruhat order in terms of the majorization relationship over a diagram of these H-invariants. ...
